Forest Flying in Eungella National Park
Whitsundays
Eungella National Park is one of Queensland's largest natural attractions. The sub-tropical rainforest covers more than 50,000 hectares and is home to the rare platypus and over 200 species of birds. Two kilometres from the park is Finch Hatton Gorge, a lush rainforest area with swimming holes and the beautiful waterfalls, it's also home to Forest Flying.
Forest Flying is the ultimate enjoyable and educational experience for anyone who loves nature. An overhead cable and pulley system takes visitors twenty-five meters above the forest floor and from here they 'fly' through the forest canopy for a spectacular bird's eye view of the surroundings. Gliding through the pristine rainforest, peering through the treetops and perhaps catching sight of an illusive Eungella Honey-Eater or a sleeping Fruit Bat, this is a unique opportunity to be at one with nature.
The pulley system is safe and secure, and visitors choose the speed at which they want to glide. The tour is accompanied by a guide who is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to the wildlife, rainforest plants and fascinating little 'titbits' about the forest. For visitors who want to explore the area fully, Finch Hatton Gorge is home to a bush camp and a small number of cabins, which certainly completes the experience after a day at Forest Flying - a great way to enjoy a closer, aerial view of the forest without upsetting the natural habitat.
The guided tours operate daily at 9am, 10:30am and 1pm, weather permitting. A full safety briefing takes place before each tour starts. There are no age restrictions or fitness requirements, but participants must have a minimum weight of 18 kg and a maximum weight of 120 kg. Long hair must be tied back and participants are advised to wear comfortable clothing, a hat and closed shoes.
