Discover the hidden history beneath your feet on a fascinating group guided walking tour of Southampton. Explore the city’s medieval walls and venture underground into a selection of atmospheric medieval vaults that lie beneath modern streets and buildings. Start at the iconic Bargate and be led by an engaging local guide. This gently-paced walk brings to life the city’s Roman, Saxon, and Viking past, the construction of its 14th-century defences, and Southampton’s rise as a key trading port under Henry II. Learn how the wine and wool trades shaped the city and hear some of the legends that still echo through its streets. Visit several medieval vaults, often hidden beneath unassuming buildings like 1960s flats or 1940s council houses. The specific vaults may vary depending on ongoing restoration work, but each offers a rare glimpse into the city’s buried heritage. This small group tour (with a maximum of 20 people) starts underneath The Bargate at 6.15pm and lasts for around 2 hours, finishing back close to the start point.
